Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator: Maturity Value & 50% Withdrawal at 18 (2026)
Estimate your daughter's Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) account maturity value at the current 8.2% interest rate, and the 50% partial withdrawal available at age 18 for her higher education. Works identically whether your account is at India Post, SBI, or any other authorised bank.
How to Use This SSY Calculator
The Maturity Calculator tab shows how your daughter's SSY account grows from the age you opened it right through to maturity, 21 years later — enter her age at account opening and how much you plan to deposit each year, and you'll get a full year-by-year breakdown along with the final maturity value. The Withdrawal at 18 tab answers the other big question parents have: how much can actually be withdrawn once she turns 18 for college, and what happens to the account afterwards if the remaining balance keeps growing (and deposits continue, if she's still within the first 15 years).
What Is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a Government of India small savings scheme launched in 2015 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, designed specifically to build a long-term, tax-free education and marriage corpus for a girl child. It is one of the highest-interest, sovereign-guaranteed savings instruments available to Indian households, and its structure — mandatory-ish long-term deposits, a long compounding runway, and a built-in partial withdrawal at 18 — is purpose-built around the real financial milestones of a girl's higher education and marriage.
Current Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Interest Rate (2026)
The SSY interest rate for the July-September 2026 quarter is 8.2% per annum, compounded annually — unchanged from the previous quarter, and consistently one of the highest rates among Government small savings schemes (compare: PPF 7.1%, Kisan Vikas Patra 7.5%). Like all small savings rates, it is reviewed by the Ministry of Finance every quarter, so confirm the prevailing rate at the time you're depositing, though your account's actual credited rate for each year is whatever rate was notified for that specific quarter/year, not locked in at account opening.
Is SBI's Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Different From the Post Office Scheme?
This is worth stating plainly since "SBI Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana calculator" and "post office Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana calculator" are both extremely common searches, as if they might be different products with different returns. They aren't — this calculator's numbers apply equally whether your passbook says India Post or any authorised bank's name on it.
Eligibility & Account Rules
- The girl child must be below 10 years of age at the time the account is opened.
- A parent or legal guardian opens and operates the account until she turns 18, after which operational control can transfer to her.
- A family can open a maximum of two SSY accounts (one per girl child), except when the second or subsequent birth results in twins or triplets, in which case more accounts are permitted with valid medical proof.
- The account holder must be a resident Indian citizen; the account is closed if she takes up citizenship elsewhere.
Deposit Rules: How Much and For How Long
You must deposit at least ₹250 in a financial year to keep the account regular, and you can deposit up to ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year, in multiples of ₹50. Deposits are required only for the first 15 years from the date the account was opened — after that, no further deposits are needed, though whatever balance has built up continues earning interest, undisturbed, until the account matures 21 years from its opening date. This 15-years-deposit-but-21-years-maturity structure is exactly what the Maturity Calculator tab above models: your last deposit happens in year 15, and the account then keeps compounding quietly for another six years before payout.
Partial Withdrawal at 18: What You Can Actually Access
Once your daughter turns 18, or completes 10th standard, whichever happens first, up to 50% of the account balance — specifically, the balance as it stood at the end of the previous financial year — becomes available for withdrawal, strictly for her higher education. You'll need proof of admission or a fee requirement letter from a recognised institution, in India or abroad, and the withdrawal can be taken as a lump sum or spread across up to five yearly instalments. The Withdrawal at 18 tab above estimates this available amount and projects how the remaining balance (plus any deposits still due within the 15-year window) grows on to the account's actual maturity at 21.
What Happens at Marriage, or If You Need to Close Early
If your daughter marries after turning 18, the entire SSY balance — principal plus all accrued interest — can be withdrawn with no interest penalty, provided the closure request falls between one month before and three months after the wedding date. Outside of marriage or reaching maturity, premature closure without penalty is allowed only for the death of the account holder, a life-threatening medical condition (after the account has run for 5 years, with documentation), or the death of the guardian. A general premature closure for any other reason is permitted only after 5 years, and comes at a real cost: the entire deposited amount is then re-credited interest at the much lower post office savings account rate instead of the SSY rate — a significant, often underestimated, loss of accumulated growth.
Tax Benefits: Full EEE Status
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana carries the rare EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax treatment: your deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C (within the overall ₹1.5 lakh annual limit, available only under the old tax regime), the interest credited every year is entirely tax-free, and the full maturity amount — including every rupee of compounded interest — is tax-free when withdrawn. Very few instruments in India offer this triple exemption, which is part of why SSY is frequently recommended as a core building block for a girl child's education or marriage fund.
SSY vs Other Government Savings Schemes
SSY vs PPF: SSY's 8.2% currently beats PPF's 7.1%, but SSY is restricted to girl children and has a fixed 21-year horizon, while PPF is open to anyone with a flexible 15-year (extendable) tenure.
SSY vs KVP: Kisan Vikas Patra is open to any resident adult and simply doubles your money over a fixed period with no restriction on how it's used, whereas SSY is purpose-built for one specific goal (a daughter's education/marriage) with a materially higher rate and full tax exemption that KVP doesn't offer.
SSY vs mutual fund SIPs: SSY offers a guaranteed, tax-free, government-backed return with zero market risk, while equity SIPs (see the SIP Calculator) carry market risk but have historically offered higher long-term growth potential — many families use both together rather than choosing one over the other.
Is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Regulated by SEBI or RBI?
No — SSY is not a security, so it doesn't fall under SEBI's jurisdiction, and it isn't a conventional bank deposit product, so the RBI doesn't directly regulate it either. Like KVP and other small savings certificates, SSY is a Government of India scheme administered by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, through the National Savings Institute, and made available through India Post and authorised banks. Its safety rests on the sovereign guarantee of the Government of India.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Missing the ₹250 annual minimum deposit, which makes the account irregular until you pay the shortfall plus a penalty to reactivate it.
- Assuming the account matures right after the 15-year deposit period ends — it doesn't; maturity is 21 years from opening, six years after deposits stop.
- Confusing "SBI SSY" or "post office SSY" as different products with different returns — they're identical.
- Not maximising deposits in the earliest years, when the extra time for compounding matters most.
- Forgetting that a general premature closure before 5 years, outside the specific penalty-free grounds, sharply cuts your effective return down to the ordinary post office savings rate.
Building a Complete Family Financial Plan
SSY works well as the guaranteed, tax-free core of a daughter's education or marriage fund, but it's rarely the only instrument a family should use.
